ST / COURT OF REVISABLE OPINIONS
The people vs. their own certainty · Docket No. 001–005

PUT YOURBELIEFSON TRIAL.

Five dangerous little questions. Twenty exhibits. One jury of you. This courtroom does not ask you to win the argument. It asks whether your belief can survive a fair hearing.

Preamble / the rules of intellectual evidence

A confident story
is not a convincing case.

Beliefs are useful. They compress messy experiences into navigable maps. But maps can omit the inconvenient street, exaggerate a destination, or disguise a preference as a fact.

This is a fictional court and a real invitation to think. No score will tell you whether you are rational. The best outcome may be a narrower belief, a better question, or a dignified “I don't know yet.”

I.
Evidence is not interpretation.Ask what a source actually supports before announcing what it means.
II.
A value is not a measurement.Facts can inform what we ought to do; they rarely settle it alone.
III.
The opposing counsel gets a microphone.Disagreement is more useful when the strongest counterargument is heard.
IV.
Every verdict has an appeal.New evidence may change your mind. That is a feature, not contempt of court.
Part I / The hearings

THE DOCKET.

Choose a case. Read the accusation. Turn over the exhibits. Object when a witness smuggles an inference into the record. Then deliberate. Shortcuts: 1–5 switch cases; J opens your journal; ? reopens the instructions.

CASE NO. 001THE PEOPLE v. THE EASY ANSWER

Question before the court
What no verdict can settle
01 / Discovery

The evidence board.

Four curated exhibits per case. These are explanatory briefs and hypothetical examples, not actual trial evidence. Read the supports column and the does not establish column before ruling.

02 / Oral arguments

Both sides are heard.

Steelman first, victory lap never. Read the argument you expect to dislike most.

03 / Cross-examination

Objection, Your Honour.

A fictional witness makes a persuasive but imperfect claim. Challenge its logic. An objection can be useful without proving the witness wrong.

COURT REPORTER / AWAITING OBJECTION

What is the weakest link between what the witness saw and what the witness concluded?

There is no trick answer here; each objection reveals a different limitation.

04 / The language lab

Same fact. Different film.

A demonstration of rhetoric, not a validated psychology test. Two editorial framings describe the same invented situation. Notice which words quietly place a thumb on the scale.

FRAMING A

INITIAL IMPRESSION — WHICH DIRECTION DID THE WORDING NUDGE YOU?

05 / Private deliberation

The jury is you.

Choose a provisional finding. Confidence describes how strongly you currently hold this judgment—not how correct you are. A genuinely undecided jury has its own door.

Part II / The appeal

The dangerous phrase is not “I don't know.”
It is “case closed.”

Strong beliefs can be carefully earned. Endless indecision is not automatically wisdom. The point is to match confidence to reasons, articulate what would falsify a claim, and stop treating moral disagreements as measurement errors. Even the fox must occasionally return its borrowed judge's wig.

Part III / The reading room

THE FOOTNOTES.

The courtroom, witnesses, framed headlines and exhibits are original fictional teaching devices. The resources below are real works that illuminate the underlying debates. Their authors did not write, validate or endorse these hearings; no case's imaginary details are findings from these sources.
